Lokal_30 at Frieze New York
Wednesday, May 1, 2019 @ 8:00 am – Sunday, May 5, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
Maria Anto, Magda Moskwa, and Ewa Juszkiewicz
Through the presentation of works by Maria Anto (1936-2007), Magda Moskwa (1967) and Ewa Juszkiewicz (1984) at Frieze Art Fair 2019, local_30 gallery from Warsaw aims to highlight Surrealist motifs in the work of these artists, and refute the claim about the absence of Surrealism in Polish art.
Maria Anto’s work represents the tradition of Surrealism, metaphorical painting and naive art – she was often compared to Henri Rousseau, Marc Chagall, Max Ernst and René Magritte.
Magda Moskwa who is called the rebel of painting is often associated with turpism: she is known for intimate portraits of women marked by the stigmas of experiences of the passage rituals, translated into extremely strong and transgressive female characters.
The youngest painter in the group shown, Ewa Juszkiewicz, continues the legacy of Polish Surrealist tradition in a fresh contemporary approach and with the painting skill of classic master painters. Her works challenge the portrait tradition by re-interpreting female portraits known from art history.
Post-war Polish Surrealism was created by personalities who shaped their world vision without affiliation with groups or movements. After 1945, Surrealism functioned as a buffer zone to react to the collective trauma of WWII and escape everyday life under Socialism.
lokal_30 is to serve art, artists and give rise to new projects of all kinds: one-off events, works-in-progress, performances, actions, socially-engaged initiatives, meetings and debates. As a gallery, lokal_30 concentrates most of its exhibition and promotion efforts on video works, with a mission to provide the best possible conditions for contact with and reflection on contemporary video art, as well as debates with the artists. lokal_30 is run by Director Agnieszka Rayzacher and collaborates with a great many of artists and curators, who all make it a venue where innovative and fascinating high quality art is exhibited and created.
