Friday, November 9, 2018 @ 9:00 am6:00 pm

Children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today. – Janusz Korcak, How to Love a Child

Please join us for a one-day conference devoted to the life and work of Polish-Jewish children’s educator, pediatrician, and writer Janusz Korczak. Coinciding with the publication of a two-volume selection of his writings, newly translated into English, the conference seeks to open up Korczak’s work to contemporary US researchers and educators as a living body of pedagogical theory and practice.

The conference will feature a keynote lecture by Dr. Marta Santos Pais, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children.
It will also include presentations by Sarah Efrat Efron (National Louis University), Mikhail Epstein (Institute of Alternative Education), Batia Gilad (former chair of the International Korczak Association), Ewa Jarosz (University of Silesia, Poland), Marek Michalak (Ombudsman of Children’s Rights, Poland), Sergei Mikhelson (Educate East-West), Benjamin Paloff (University of Michigan), Kristin Poppo (Alfred State College), Marcia Talmage Schneider (independent scholar, author, and educator), and Mariola Strahlberg (Janusz Korczak Assocation of the US).

“Janusz Korczak: Legacy, Pedagogy, Children’s Rights” is co-presented by the Harriman Institute at Columbia University, the Janusz Korczak Association of the USA, and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.

The conference is free and open to the public. The full agenda can be viewed here.
