The question of identity is a preoccupation in both France and the United States today, for somewhat different reasons, and debates about identity politics play out in very different ways in the two countries. Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur has spoken and written about the question of identity, and particularly Jewish identity in France, and has also been been a strong advocate for Jewish-Muslim dialogue, for example in a book she wrote with Rachid Benzine entitled Des mille et une façons d’être juif ou musulman. Her other books include Comment les rabbins font les enfants and En tenue d’Ève : féminin, pudeur et judaïsme. Rabbi Horvilleur is only the third female rabbi in France. She was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York in 2008, and later returned to Paris, where she leads a congregation and is currently co-leading the Liberal Jewish Movement of France. She is also editor-in-Chief of the quarterly Jewish magazine Revue de pensée(s) juive(s) Tenou’a.
