Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival 2020

The Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival 2020 will bring the new music of Ukraine to the world’s most exciting musical center, and will contextualize this important repertoire through discussion with scholars, performers, and composers. The festival will offer three days of programming including performance and discussion of contemporary Ukrainian music. Each presentation will be followed by a performance of contemporary works associated with the preceding discussion. Our exceptional performers, who specialize in contemporary repertoire and music from Ukraine, come from in and around New York City.

The Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival 2020, held in New York City, will showcase Ukraine’s diverse living composers through performance and discussion, exploring music’s role in contemporary culture and politics.

PROGRAM

50 Years of Ukrainian Culture: Music, Literature, and Art

Friday, February 28 at 5:00pm
Elebash Hall, The Graduate Center (CUNY)

Mark Andryczyk, Oksana Nesterenko and Olena Martynyuk discuss the arts in Ukraine from the twilight of the Soviet period to the present, followed by a concert of works by Ukraine’s distinguished composers.

Music and Revolution in Ukraine

Saturday, February 29 at 4:00pm
Lang Recital Hall, Hunter College

Inessa Bazayev, Peter Schmelz and Leah Batstone explore Ukrainian music and revolution from the 1920s through the post-Maidan era. A concert of works combining examples from the Soviet avant-garde, Kyiv avant-garde with musical responses Maidan will follow.

Composer’s Roundtable

Ukrainian Museum

Anna Korsun, Ludmila Yurina, and Svyatoslav Lunyov discuss their music with Leonid Hrabovsky, followed by a concert of their works.
