Filmmaker Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller and Dietmar Schwärzler (sixpackfilm) will be at the event in person!
The Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller film series is presented by and at Anthology Film Archives, in collaboration with Erste Bank, Deutsches Haus at NYU, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and sixpackfilm.
Tickets can be bought online here or at Anthology’s box office (32 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003) on the day of the show. The box office opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day.
Please note: To attend the screenings at Anthology Film Archives, proof of vaccination is required (vaccination cards – original or photo – or Excelsior Pass) and masks must be worn at all times, in the lobbies, theaters, and bathrooms. In accordance with CDC recommendations, this includes those who have received the COVID-19 vaccination.
About the Program:
In Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller’s work, the moving image and still photography are always interrelated. For many of her film projects she first photographs her protagonists as a way of getting closer to them. The earliest films stem from a desire to hold onto a moment by capturing a face or facial expression, inspired by the flair of the Nouvelle Vague. In her later films, however, she increasingly makes use of surprise or an attack on her subjects, through which she attempts to satisfy her keen interest in people and their psyches.
Each program in this series combines Kubelka vom Gröller’s films and photographs; in Program 1, the films are interspersed with her famous “Pin-Up” series, as well as a selection of her portraits of American experimental filmmakers such as Hollis Frampton, Ken Jacobs, Kenneth Anger, and Jack Smith. The program also includes an audio piece by Miranda July, whose short story “The Metal Bowl” was inspired by one of Kubelka vom Gröller’s photos.
