Peppe Voltarelli is a singer-songwriter and actor whose body of work is dedicated to exploring the Italian diaspora throughout the world. In his performance and talk, Peppe recreates the atmosphere of ancient Sicilian and Calabrian tales narrated by popular Southern Italian storytellers and musicians, while updating them for a modern audience.
These engaging stories, along with rich sounds, rhythms and melodies, accompany an extraordinary musical experience. This dynamic multimedia event includes projections of paintings by Anna and Rosaria Corcione, inspired by Pop Artist Mimmo Rotella. These pieces recall the traditional practice of using images along with songs and narration in popular storytelling.
This project is dedicated to the work of fellow Calabrian folk singer, Otello Profazio, active since 1950 as an author, researcher and historic memory of Italian popular music.
Introduced by Voltarelli and artist Anna Corcione, in conversation with Stefano Albertini (NYU) and Joseph Sciorra(CUNY).
