Machine à Écrire: Simone Schwarz-Bart in Conversation with Laure Adler

The third season of Machines à Écrire kicks off Thursday, October 7th at 12 pm EST with acclaimed writer Simone Schwarz-Bart. Later in the 2021-2022 season, La Maison Française welcomes authors Laurent Mauvignier, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Djaïli Amadou Amal.
Simone Schwarz-Bart (née Brumant) was born on the southwest coast of France in Charente, moving with her mother to Guadeloupe at a very young age. She met her husband, writer André Schwarz-Bart, while studying in Paris. Together they wrote a novel, Un plat de porc aux bananes verts (A Dish of Pork with Green Bananas), as well as a six-volume encyclopedic work, Hommage à la femme noire (In Praise of Black Women). Schwarz-Bart has lived throughout the world, eventually settling in Goyave, a small community in Guadeloupe. Her novel, Pluie et Vents sur Télumée Miracle (The Bridge of Beyond) was awarded Elle magazine’s literary prize. Schwarz-Bart is also the author of the novel Ti Jean L’ horizon (Between Two Worlds), and a play, Ton beau capitaine (Your Handsome Captain).
Laure Adler is a journalist, writer, publisher, radio/TV producer, former director of France Culture, and author of a number of books, among them Marguerite Duras (Prix Femina de l’essai).
