Lecture: Dante and English Romanticism. Voicing Freedoms

Tuesday, April 18, 2017 @ 6:30 pm8:30 pm

A lecture by Diego Saglia (Università di Parma).

Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, British culture saw a surge in the interest in Dante and his Divina Commedia. Writers, artists, translators and critics engaged with his figure and work with unprecedented intensity, thereby stimulating a widespread fascination with Dante that also inspired an increasing number of original works of fiction based on episodes from the Commedia. The talk discusses some of these rewritings by focusing on poems by liberal and radical authors such as Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt and Felicia Hemans, who remade Dante to promote ideas of political and social freedom and in the process confirmed his status as a crucial figure of modernity.

In ENGLISH.
