Journey: Portrait of Vera Chytilova
Tuesday, February 5, 2019 @ 7:00 pm
[1st Floor]
A documentary film about Věra Chytilová, a prominent Czech director and a creative force of the Czechoslovak New Wave in the 1960s. “Striving, with or without success… that is the pathos of the human existence” – Chytilová talks about her life endeavour, the rises and falls, the losts and founds and primarily, about creativity.
Director: Jasmina Blaževič, 2004, 52 min, Czech Republic. In Czech with English subtitles.
In the movie, the 74-year-old director is respected as a seminal director in the history of Czech film, though she is yet to attain true happiness. At first glance her life seems perfect. She has been successful at everything she has touched: she made films and had the strength to stand up to the Communist malevolence. Many of her films are considered gems of world cinema and have taken corresponding awards. At one time she seemed content in her personal life as well: she married a fine man, a renowned director of photography, and they had two kids, a lovely house and garden, cats and a dog, everything to make a home. In spite of this, when she looks back, it’s difficult for her to find meaning in her long and productive life.
