How Covid-19 is Reshaping Politics in Europe

This roundtable discussion will examine how responses to the pandemic have differed between countries and from the USA; how the pandemic rearranged political fault lines within or between countries; and what impact the pandemic might have had on existing discussions about populism and the European Union.
With Hadas Aron (Center for European and Mediterranean Studies, NYU), David Forgacs (Italian Studies, NYU), Christian Martin (Political Science, University of Kiel; CEMS and German, NYU) and Frédéric Viguier (Institute of French Studies, NYU).
Hadas Aron is a Faculty Fellow at NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies. Her research focuses on populism, nationalism, international security, and social and ethnic cleavages with a regional focus on Eastern Europe and Israel.
David Forgacs holds the endowed Guido and Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò Chair in Contemporary Italian Studies and is the chair of NYU’s Department of Italian Studies. His research focuses on media and politics in contemporary Italy, cinema and photography. He is the author of several books including Italy’s Margins: Social Exclusion and Nation Formation since 1861.
Christian Martin is a professor of political science at the University of Kiel, Germany. He currently holds the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at New York University. He has published on the effects of globalization for electoral participation. His current research project is on backlashes against globalization and EU integration.
Frédéric Viguier is a sociologist and clinical associate professor at NYU’s Institute of French Studies. His research focuses on welfare and education policies in France and the francophone world. He is the author of La Cause des pauvres en France.
