How Can We Create an International System Ready for the 21st Century?

Tuesday, April 18, 2017 @ 6:00 pm7:00 pm

Help shape how the UN will utilize new technology!

Tom Fletcher (Former U.K. Ambassador) is looking for your ideas for a groundbreaking set of recommendations to the new UN Secretary General, on how digital technology can help the UN. Join us next Tuesday at the Graduate Student Commons, 120 Silver Center at 6pm for a town hall with refreshments and network opportunities. Can our generation fix the global challenges that the last generation left us? Over to you!

Tom Fletcher was British Ambassador to Lebanon from 2011-15: the youngest senior British Ambassador for 200 years. He is author of this viral diplomatic cable and blogs under the name “The Naked Diplomat.” He was astonishingly active on social media during his ambassadorship, posting on average 6 or 7 tweets a day (with twice as many followers as the British Foreign Secretary.) He was the Downing Street foreign policy adviser to three British Prime Ministers (2007-11), including David Cameron.

In his new book, ‘The Naked Diplomat: Power and Politics in the Digital Age’ he considers how we can use technology to create opportunity, improve security, outsmart the extremists and make it easier for citizens to truly reclaim control. Tom is currently working on a report on the future of the United Nations for the new UN Secretary General — and wants your input!

Hosted by the NYU International Relations and Politics Association and moderated by Dan Benaim, speechwriter and policy advisor.
