Historical Atlas of the Hasidim by Marcin Wodziński
Tuesday, October 9, 2018 @ 7:00 pm
Historical Atlas of Hasidism is the very first cartographic reference book on one of the modern era’s most vibrant and important mystical movements. Featuring seventy-four large-format maps and a wealth of illustrations, charts, and tables, this one-of-a-kind atlas charts Hasidism’s emergence and expansion; its dynasties, courts, and prayer houses; its spread to the New World; the crisis of the two world wars and the Holocaust; and Hasidism’s remarkable postwar rebirth. The event will feature a presentation by Marcin Wodziński showcasing the book and many of its maps. Wodziński will then be joined by David Biale for a conversation about this new path-breaking work.
Marcin Wodziński is professor of Jewish studies at the University of Wrocław in Poland. His many books include Hasidism: A New History (Princeton) and Hasidism and Politics: The Kingdom of Poland, 1815–1864.
David Biale is the Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History at the University of California, Davis.
