Guadeloupe, Martinique & Puerto Rico. Comparing Post-Colonial, Non-Sovereign Trajectories

Yarimar Bonilla is Associate Professor of anthropology at Hunter College, CUNY. Her work focuses on questions of sovereignty, citizenship, and race across the Americas. She has tracked these issues across a broad range of sites: anti-colonial labor activism in the French Caribbean, the role of digital protest in the Black Lives Matter movement, the politics of the Trump presidency, and her current research on the political and social aftermath of hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. She is the author of Non-Sovereign Futures: French Caribbean Politics in the Wake of Disenchantment (U. of Chicago Press, 2015).

Audrey Célestine is a political sociologist at the Université de Lille and the Institut Universitaire de France. She is currently a visiting professor at NYU’s Institute of French Studies where she teaches a course on the historical sociology of France’s relationships with its “overseas” territories in the Caribbean. Her research explores political mobilizations by Antilleans in France and Puerto Ricans in the United States. She is the author of Une Famille Française. Des Antilles à Dunkerque en passant par l’Algérie,  (Textuel, 2018) and La fabrique politique des identités. L’encadrement politique des minorités caribéennes à Paris et New York (Karthala, 2018).

Edgardo Meléndez is Professor of Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino studies at Hunter College, CUNY. His research focuses on Puerto Rican and Latino politics in the United States, and politics in Puerto Rico. He is the author of many books, including Sponsored Migration: The State and Puerto Rican Postwar Migration to the United States (Ohio State University Press, 2017); Puerto Rican Government and Politics: A Comprehensive Bibliography (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2000); Colonial Dilemma: Critical Perspectives on Contemporary Puerto Rico, co-edited with Edwin Meléndez (South End Press, 1993).

Herrick Chapman is Professor of French Studies and History at New York University. He is the author of several books, including France’s Long Reconstruction (Harvard University Press, 2018) and the co-editor of Race in France (Berghahn, 2004).
