Film Screening: Closeness

Please join the Harriman Institute and the Russian Film Club for a screening of the 2017 film Closeness, directed by Kantemir Balagov. This event is part of the Russian Cinema Between Protests Film Series, organized by Mark Lipovetsky (Slavic Department) and Daria Ezerova (Harriman Institute). The film has a run time of 118 minutes and will be presented with English subtitles.
A film of arresting beauty, Closeness is the story of a kidnapping in a Jewish community in Nalchik. The film’s premiere at Cannes turned 26-year-old Balagov into an overnight sensation.

Released between two waves of protests, spanning from 2011 to 2019, this selection of independent films offers a critical reflection on life in contemporary Russia, cutting across genres and styles. Join us for the screenings and stay tuned for special events with the filmmakers! All films will be introduced by Mark Lipovetsky (Slavic Department) and Daria Ezerova (Harriman Institute). The films will be screened with English subtitles.
