NYU’s Department of German and and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Fantasmical Anatomies: A Performative Lecture in Dialogue” by Gabriele Brandstetter (Professor of Theater and Dance Studies at Freie Universität Berlin) and Anne Juren (choreographer, dancer, and performer).

In contemporary dance, choreographers and dancers integrate linguistic images in distinctive ways in order to differentiate and explore various movement qualities. Figures of language, metaphors, and semantic fields – like concepts of “anatomy” – are used to sensitize the body and transform movement patterns. The ongoing studies on “Fantasmical Anatomies” of Anne Juren explore body-oriented practices by the speculative use of language, imagination and touch.

The presentation of Gabriele Brandstetter, and Anne Juren will show the idea and the setting of the performance of “Fantasmical Anatomies” by drawing on various fields of knowledge such as anatomy, psychoanalysis, feminist and queer theory, poetry and somatic practices. In which way are metaphors influencing the imagination of the body? How is the speculative addressing of somatic practice disfiguring concepts of anatomy? And how can this be considered as a politics of expanded choreography?
