Exhibition opening: The Genesis and Life of Opera Kata Kabanova

[2nd Floor] Opening of the exhibition “The Genesis and Life of Janacek’s Opera Kata Kabanova” exploring the circumstances surrounding the creation and first staging of the opera in Brno in 1921. It also presents the history of productions of Janacek’s operas at the Metropolitan Opera and a series of paper collages by a Brno-based artist Vendula Chalankova featuring characters from Janacek’s operas and portraits of Leos Janacek and those close to him.

Opening remarks by Michael Beckerman, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Music and Collegiate Professor at New York University, and Jiri Zahradka, the curator and Leos Janacek Memorial director at the Department of Music History at the Moravian Museum in Brno.

Followed by music performance by students of Mannes School of Music.

The exhibition coincides with the staging of Leos Janacek’s opera Kata Kabanova at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in spring 2020.

This event is organized by Czech Center New York, Department of Music History at the Moravian Museum in Brno, Brno Tourist Information Centre, The Metropolitan Opera with support of the Dvorak American Heritage Association.
