Elements of Border and Infrastructure: Earth I

The land question is an age old in the political history of the Middle East, but only more recently has scholarship on the politics of conservation and resource management brought such questions to bear on this topic. This panel invites its participants to discuss the impact of land management in the context of conservation and agricultural development since the late 20th century, and to ask how new conceptions of ecological morality, justice, and politics are shaping the regional response to both climate change and the legacies of imperialism, colonialism, and occupation. Further, we invite them to consider how the particular imbrication of climate and land politics should alter our understanding of future directions for climate justice on a global scale.

This panel will feature presentations and discussion with Max Ajl (Wageningen University), Bridget Guarasci (Franklin and Marshall) and Caterina Scaramelli (Boston University).

Max AjlMax Ajlis a postdoctoral fellow at the Rural Sociology Group at Wageningen University and an associated researcher at the Tunisian Observatory for Food Sovereignty and the Environment. He is an associate editor at Agrarian South. His scholarly work has been published in Journal of Peasant Studies, Globalizations, and Review of African Political Economy. He works on Arab agrarian issues and dependency theory, and modern Tunisian history. His book, A People’s Green New Deal, was published in 2021 with Pluto Press.
Bridget GuarasciBridget Guarasci is an environmental anthropologist whose work examines how war and conflict generate ecological life in the Arab majority world. Her book manuscript Ecology of War: Iraq’s Marshes on the Battlegrounds of War considers how multinational investments in the biodiversity conservation of Iraq’s southern marshes during the US occupation and UN reconstruction era facilitated their extraction of oil and water in the same geological field.
Caterina ScaramelliCaterina Scaramelli is an anthropologist of the environment and science. Her research addresses experiences of everyday life, work, and knowledge in uncertain ecologies, the politics of environmental expertise, and the political ecology of conservation. She is drawn to watery places — like rivers, wetlands, marshes, urban water systems, and agricultural irrigation – and to practices of cultivation and seed-saving. She holds a BA in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics and a PhD from MIT’s History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology and Society.
