Economic Histories of Russia and the Soviet Union: Sources, methods and perspectives
Friday, September 14, 2018 @ 9:30 am – Saturday, September 15, 2018 @ 3:00 pm
On Friday, September 14th through Saturday, September 15th please join us for “Economic Histories of Russia and the Soviet Union: Sources, methods and perspectives”, a workshop co-sponsored by EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales) Paris and the NYU-PSL Global Alliance and hosted by the NYU Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia.
Building on the recent renewal of global interest in and scientific and political relevance of the Soviet economic experience, this colloquium will create an international forum for social scientists (historians, economists, sociologists and anthropologists) to discuss sources, methods and approaches to Russian and Soviet economic history. It will offer a forum for social scientists to debate not the alleged singularity of the Soviet non-market economy, but the lived experiences of multiple economic realities, through and beyond times of political and economic crisis, reform and revolution, war, industrialization, hunger, growth, stagnation. It will also promote a collective critical reflection on our very different sources and methods, by systematically reflecting on the ways that information on economic practices was gathered and constructed by the state.
Save the date and stay tuned for the final program!
