Concert: Pilsner Jazz Band, Swinging to Freedom
Wednesday, January 29, 2020 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
[4th Floor] Concert of the Pilsner Jazz Band, an eight-member orchestra from the city of Pilsen, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Pilsen’s liberation by US Army troops. The Pilsner Jazz Band will perform their wide repertoire, from jazz to swing and blues.
On May 6, 1945, the West Bohemian city of Pilsen was liberated by troops of the US Third Army, which gradually reached the city after disembarking on the beaches of Normandy on the legendary D-Day. This ended the occupation of the city by the Nazi Third Reich.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation, the city of Pilsen will be hosting in the Czech Republic a range of celebratory events in May 2020 as part of the Liberation Festival. Representatives of the Pilsen City Council will attend the Pilsner Jazz Band’s New York concert to present their city.
In the ten years of their existence, Pilsner Jazz Band has managed to secure its place on the Czech traditional jazz and swing scene. The orchestra concentrates on the ‘Golden Era’ of jazz – dixieland and swing, but their eclectic repertoire also includes boogie-woogie, blues and Latin standard jazz. They receive regular invitations to both Czech and foreign festivals, and perform at concerts, weddings, corporate events, parties and other events. Their wide repertoire contains something for everyone – from the old dixieland pieces from the streets of New Orleans to hits from New York dance clubs by Glenn Miller or Duke Ellington, to pieces which have been underrated for decades.
